The Young Chemists Group (GQJ) of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ) was created in December, 8th, 2007. The GQJ represents a scientific platform that gathers chemists’ until 35y with the following objectives:

    Promotion of networks within the young chemists in Portuguese research centers;
    Link the chemical community both in research and industry;
    Represent the Portuguese young chemists in international affairs, such as the European Young Chemists Network (EYCN).
The GQJ concentrates its efforts in the following activities:
    PYCheM, the biennial conference of young chemists in Portugal;
    PYCA, a biennial award for the best PhD thesis of a young chemist;
    ChemRus, an annual competition of scientific videos based on chemical knowledge for high school students.
If you want to be part of GQJ, please send an email to sede@spq.pt, presenting your name, filiation, SPQ associate number and email address.

PYCheM

The Portuguese Young Chemists Meeting, PYCheM, is a biennial conference dedicated to the science produced by the Portuguese young chemists. PYCheM represents the main event in the calendar for chemists under 35y, in an intellectual and stimulant environment. Since the 1 PYCheM in Lisbon, this conference is growing in the number of participants and in the quality and relevance of international scientists present (3 Nobel Prize Winners).

9ª edição do concurso ChemRus

PYCA

The Portuguese Young Chemists Award (PYCA) intends to promote the PhD thesis developed by a young researcher - in Chemistry area at a Portuguese University - with the highest scientific and social impact. This award is assigned in each PYCheM to newly PhD’s. The winner as the opportunity to write an article for the SPQ’s magazine, in addition to a monetary prize.

EYCN European Young Chemists Network

The EYCN is the division of young chemists of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS), which is an umbrella organization representing national chemical societies from across Europe and was created in 2007 in Berlin. EYCN is a motivated team of young scientists from 28 European countries, counting 40 official delegates (under the age of 35), representing and supporting more than 35.000 early career chemists across Europe. The EYCN aims to improve the visibility of chemistry and bring it closer to a wider audience and to people from outside the research field - including schools, partners in industry, business, and management. EYCN wants to provide development and networking opportunities to early career chemists across Europe and beyond. In the last years, more than 30 initiatives were coordinated or supported by the EYCN at a global level, in Europe and abroad. Among these, more than 20 conferences were sponsored and around 30 young chemists were awarded prizes for their outstanding scientific contributions. As young chemists, the EYCN priority is to enhance research collaboration where ideas and people can grow without limits and borders.

The GQJ represents the Portuguese young chemists in all the activities promoted by the EYCN since its early beginnings. The development and marketing of these activities across Europe requires an annual Delegates Assembly (DA). The GQJ had the honor to organize the 7th DA in Aveiro in 2012 and the 11th DA in Guimarães in 2016. Moreover, the 1st European Young Chemists Meeting (EYCheM) was also held in 2016 as a joint event with the 5th Portuguese Young Chemists Meeting. The current Portuguese delegates are André Seco and Carina Crucho (EYCN treasurer). Former delegates include João Borges, Ana Rita Araújo, Diana Ferreira, David Conceição and Luis Moreira Gonçalves among others.

All the EYCN activities can be found at www.eycn.eu or followed on social media channels. For further comments or suggestions, please use communication@eycn.eu!
